Urban Homestead with Justin, Jordanne, and Anais Dervaes
March 28 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm
As part of our sustainability series, Culture Club 101 is pleased to introduce, The Urban Homestead. The Urban Homestead is a small but mighty family farm smack dab in the middle of Los Angeles. While this home may be growing and harvesting just 15 minutes from downtown, surrounded by miles and miles of concrete, this ain’t no hobby garden! On less than a quarter acre, The Urban Homestead has the capacity to harvest 7,000 pounds of produce annually, selling through CSA programs, and providing area fine restaurants, country clubs, and caterers with locally-grown produce, well beyond organic standards. Over the years, the Urban Homestead has been featured on CBS, ABC, Oprah, the LA Times and in the NY Times, inspiring urban farmers the world over and proving that where there’s a will there’s way.
Members of the Dervaes family will share how they transformed their ordinary home into an extraordinary model of urban farming & sustainability.
After the sudden passing of their father in 2016, they are carrying on the vision. Discover how they are growing the future of their urban family farm thru CSA, volunteer, co-housing and educational programs.
